What is reiki?
Reiki, believed to have originally been practiced in Tibet thousands of years ago and oftentimes referred to as palm healing, is more of a spiritual practice than a healing process, using the palms of the hands. Unlike most healing techniques, reiki is practiced with little actual touching. With the exception of the head, the practitioner's hands rarely touch the patient's body. They move around the body focusing on certain energy centers, or chakras, and energy is transferred through the palms. The original source of reiki was unfortunately forgotten due to different cultures adopting different methods.
Ancient art of reiki
Reiki healing was reintroduced in the 1800's by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian educator in Kyoto, Japan. who studied the history, as well as the leaders. He brought back the ancient sounds and symbols that are considered life energy for healing after realizing their link to the human body.
Getting relief for organs and other internal parts of the body is something most people would turn to a doctor for. This is something that those who practice reiki or reiki massage will tell you is not necessary.
Why choose reiki massage?
There are seven reiki chakras, or energy centers, located on the human body. The root chakra, or lower pelvic area, keeps a person grounded to physical existence. The sacral chakra, located at the navel, helps creativity, emotions, and sexuality. Just above the navel is the solar plexus chakra which opens and transforms a person's hopes and aspirations. Then there is the heart chakra which is the link between spiritual existence and physical existence. The throat chakra aids in communication, while the third-eye chakra helps one to see beyond ordinary sight. The final chakra is the crown, or above the head, which when energy flows, inner peace is achieved.

Reiki massage - What should you expect?
The traditional method of this kind of bodywork involves using the hand to manipulate the body. This means a Reiki practitioner will work on your hand to give you the relief you long for. The more Western philosophy involves the placing of one's hands in order to achieve the same results. This means your body will be manipulated in order to provide relief of different muscle groups and to align the skeletal frame. No matter which one of the two methods you choose, they both depend on the idea that the body’s parts are interconnected and as such you will be able to manipulate the function of one part of the body by rubbing on another part. The bodywork practice was started in 1920 and has many followers which believe inherently in the healing power of Reiki.
